Betty Virginia Ruff Durham, born on January 28, 1928, peacefully passed away on November 9, 2023. Betty was the youngest of ten children born to Fredrick and Hattie Ruff. She grew up at 618 Edmonson Avenue, forming close bonds with her siblings in a childhood filled with fun and adventure despite limited resources.
In her adolescent years, Betty thrived in the small village of Catonsville, enjoying a rural lifestyle. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, remaining a devoted member until 2008 when she moved in with her daughter Susan and son-in-law Michael.
Betty attended Catonsville Elementary School and graduated from Catonsville High School in June 1946. At the age of 17, she became engaged to Leanard (Ben) Durham and married the following year after Ben's return from Army service in Germany during World War II. Their marriage lasted for 32 joyful years until Ben's passing in 1978
Throughout her life, Betty found immense pride and joy in her family. The births of her two children, Alan and Susan, were cherished moments, as were the arrivals of her grandchildren Brian Durham and Natalie Lawson, and great-grandchildren Gray and Violet Lawson. Family Sunday dinners at home, with all her brothers and sisters returning to visit, were particularly special.
In her professional life, Betty worked as a secretary in the medical records department at Spring Grove Hospital Center for 22 years, forming lasting friendships until her retirement in 1988. She was dedicated to her civic responsibilities, actively participating in Salem Lutheran Church, the Red Cross, volunteering for blood drives, and engaging in various community services. Betty was also a member of the Altar Guild.
Some of Betty's favorite things included her love for reading, enjoying a book or two each week. She had a penchant for side dishes, even if they didn't fit into the meal plan, and relished having one beer with dinner. Maryland crabs held a special place in her heart, and she insisted on not bringing home store-bought crab cakes.
Betty Virginia Ruff Durham will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the love she shared with her family and community. May she rest in peace.
