Charles James Roman, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, at the age of 84. Born in Baltimore, MD on April 27, 1940, Jim was the cherished son of Kenneth C Roman and Margaret P Cooper, both of whom predeceased him, as did his brother, Kenneth C Roman Jr. ("Pete").
Jim leaves behind his loving wife, Elaine G Roman, his childhood sweetheart and companion of 63 years. Together, they shared a lifetime of love, adventure, and unwavering support. He was the proud father of Marci Smit (Steve) and Steven Roman (Suzy), and a devoted grandfather to six grandchildren: Zachary Smit, Samantha Smit, Jeffrey Roman, Margaret Roman, Jack Roman, and Hadley Roman. Known fondly by family and friends as Jim, Uncle Jimmy, Dad, and Oompa, he was a beloved figure in the lives of those around him.
Jim was an alum of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1965. After his service, he attended the University of Baltimore, earning an Industrial Management degree. Throughout his career, Jim held various positions, but it was his work in the eye solutions industry that he found most fulfilling. He retired from Bausch & Lomb as a Product Inventory Manager, leaving a legacy of dedication and hard work.
A man of many talents, Jim was known for his love of reading, particularly enjoying sci-fi books while relaxing in his hammock or lounging by the pool. He was a master DIYer, always taking on house projects with precision and passion. Jim had a special love for his treasured Lionel Trains and delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, often playing in the yard and sharing his hobbies with them.
Jim and Elaine lived in various states, including Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York, as they raised their children and followed professional opportunities. In recent years, they returned to Maryland to be closer to family, where they created even more memories with loved ones.
Jim's kindness, warmth, and sense of humor will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. His legacy of love, service, and devotion to his family will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
Jim will forever be remembered for the love he gave, the life he lived, and the joy he brought to those around him.
