Diane Merida Lawton

September 10, 1933 — January 21, 2025

Diane Lawton, a longtime teacher at Baltimore’s Western High School died on January 21st after a long valiant ght against Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Diane grew up in Green Bay,Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a double major in history and physical education. Upon graduation she joined the Women’s Army Corps where she reached the rank of captain. In 1965, she started her long teaching career at Western High School where she was also an outstanding softball and tennis coach. During that tenure she received her master’s degree in education at Towson University. A voracious reader,she possessed a wealth of knowledge in the liberal arts. Before Google, one could depend on Diane for information on history, art, literature, opera, classical music, architecture, or the denition of any word. Besides reading, she loved tending to her roses, spending time by the ocean, solving the NYT crossword, watching her Green Bay Packers,and caring for her dogs and cats. All who knew her were charmed by her playful sense of humor, quick wit, and irrepressible smile! Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Father Henry Brendemihl and Merida Brendemihl. She is survived by her partner, Shirley Williams; her brother, Fred Brendemihl; nieces , Heidi Brendemihl and Carrie (Iain) Whyte; nephew, Fritz (Laura) Brendemihl; grandnieces , Elsa Whyte and Chloé Whyte; and grandnephew, Sean Whyte. Diane will be laid to rest with her beloved parents at the Nashotah House Episcopalian Cemetery in Nashotah, Wisconsin where her father attended seminary.
