Dan Weinreich was born in 1942 in wartime Clermont-Ferrand, France. He was the only child of Jeanne and Otto, proud members of the Resistance there. After World War II the small family immigrated to the United States, where Dan's French heritage continued to drive his lifelong love of good food and eventually wine - although he promptly forgot his French language and became an English speaker as a schoolchild.
Despite an initial lack of enthusiasm for school Dan ultimately became a dedicated student of neurophysiology, earning his Ph.D. at the University of Utah. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the City of Hope in southern California he became a highly respected neuroscientist and a professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he ran a research lab and taught for 47 years. Throughout these decades he was also an avid skier, squash player and fly fisherman – and a devoted father of three.
Dan was beloved by his family, colleagues, students and friends. He passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home the night of November 26th, leaving behind his wife Debbie, his children Mark (Tiffany), Nicole (Kielan) and Jennie (Vince) and grandchildren Megan, Dylan, Jaden and Cole. He will always be remembered and will be missed terribly by all.
