Elizabeth Ann Kern (Betty), age 86, entered peacefully into the presence of the Lord on May 4, 2026. While our hearts grieve her absence, we rejoice knowing she is embraced by God’s eternal love and grace.
Elizabeth went by many names. Elizabeth, Betty Ann, Betty, Aunt Betty Ann, Grandma Betty, Mom, Mommy, Mama B, Bad Betty.
Betty was born on February 2, 1940, in Baltimore, MD to Fredrick and Mary Kern. She lived a life rooted in sharing Christ’s love through her words, actions, and unwavering devotion to those around her.
Betty worked for Johns Hopkins for 25 plus years and enjoyed a side business/hobby in Antiques.
Betty loved serving others at her church. She helped at the outreach program and worked with the Ladies Auxiliary, and The Senior Club had a very special place in her heart. She very rarely missed BINGO !
She loved her water aerobics classes at the YMCA and all the wonderful friendships she made there.
Betty loved and enjoyed the beauty of nature, and all flowers.
She will be remembered for her love of family and friends. Whether she was rooting on her favorite sports teams or gathering loved ones around the table for a delicious meal or a game of cards, she had a gift for making people feel at home and she loved a good time!
She is lovingly survived by her brother Fred Kern and her children and their spouses: James LaFond, Tony and Amanda LaFond, Theresa and Gene Gibson, her grandchildren: Jared and Susan LaFond, Garren and Valarie LaFond, Jordan LaFond, Monique and Ashley LaFond, Ayden Bush and Emma Bush. As well as numerous great grandchildren, cherished nieces and nephews and many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred Kern Sr. and Mary Kern, and her sister Madeline Kern.
A funeral mass will be held on June 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church, located at 1450 Abingdon Road, Abingdon, MD 21009.
Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, laughter, and memories and honor the beautiful life God blessed us with through her.
