Emily Elizabeth Rieger, 45, of Columbia, Maryland, passed away surrounded by family at Inova Fairfax Hospital on June 26, 2026. Emily was born and raised in Midland, MI. She was the first graduate to receive the Nonprofit Leadership Certification bestowed by Western Michigan University in 2003, before continuing her education at University of Michigan and receiving a Masters Degree in Social Work in 2005. Emily was an amazing woman that had a knack for bringing people together wherever she was. From her first job at the Louisiana School of Math and Science, where as a resident counselor she guided and helped countless students thru Katrina and its aftermath to Oxford College at Emory and then George Washington University where she worked as a Community Service Coordinator, helping students connect with the surrounding community to her final job as Events Coordinator for the community of Hickory Ridge, where she brought residents together through her countless events. Even with all of her accomplishments, Emily’s proudest moment and most loved “job” was Mom. Emily was taken far to soon from all that knew her. She is survived by her mother MaryPat, her father Lee, her daughter Ryanne, her son Liam, her son Mason, and her loving husband Kurt. Her laughter, smile, and joy for life will forever be missed.
In lieu of flowers, Emily would wish you to donate to a nonprofit or community organization of your choice.
