Eric Thaddeus Huss, age 61, of Ellicott City, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on July 7, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a mainstay of the local hockey community. Eric is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Diane; his devoted son, Nicholas; and his three cherished grandsons, Carter, Greyson, and Lester Thaddeus (LT). He is also survived by his brothers, Tony and Jonathan (Liz); his sister, Caryn; and a large, loving extended family of multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Joan Huss; his sister, Stephanie; and his nephew, Roger Kriegl.
Early Life and Education
Born in Long Island, Eric grew up in Suffern, New York, where he developed his lifelong drive, competitive spirit, and strength of character. He attended the Hackley Preparatory School in Tarrytown, New York, establishing a strong academic foundation before pursuing higher education. Eric earned his Bachelor of Arts from Iona College, New Rochelle, NY, followed by a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from UNC Charlotte. He ultimately achieved his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University, a testament to his deep commitment to understanding human behavior and helping others.
A Distinguished Career
Eric dedicated over 30 years to the healthcare insurance industry, seamlessly combining his sophisticated clinical psychological background with corporate management leadership. Throughout his distinguished career, he served as a highly respected Senior Account Manager for Optum Behavioral Health and as a Senior Consultant with both Cigna and Elevance Health. Known for his keen professionalism, insight, and mentorship, Eric left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the industry at large.
A Legacy on the Ice
Beyond his professional and academic accomplishments, Eric’s enduring passion was hockey. A dedicated Washington Capitals season ticket holder for over 21 years, he was a widely recognized and deeply respected figure throughout the Maryland hockey community. Eric served as the captain of multiple adult league hockey teams in Central Maryland, valued equally for his leadership on the ice and his genuine camaraderie off of it.
His love for the game extended far beyond his own time on the ice. Eric spent many years coaching youth hockey, mentoring the next generation of players, teaching them sportsmanship, and tirelessly raising funds for multiple non-profit organizations to expand access to the sport.
Celebration of Life & Memorial Donations
A celebration of life will be planned in the near future to honor Eric’s remarkable legacy and impact.
