Gunter Gerhard
Kloppsteck
March 9, 1947 – January 8, 2026
It is with profound respect and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr. Gunter Gerhard Kloppsteck, a man whose life was as richly textured and meaningful as the photographs he so lovingly captured. Born on March 9, 1947, in Berlin, Germany, Gunter departed this life on January 8, 2026, in Eldersburg, Maryland.
Gunter’s journey was marked by hardships, a deep commitment to service, education, and his daughters. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in June of 1965. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on February 14, 1967. He attended CUNY from 1969 to 1971.A veteran of the United States Army during the tumultuous years of the Vietnam War, he exemplified duty and resilience. Following his military service, he devoted himself to the pursuit of knowledge and the imparting of it. He graduated 1st from the Technical Career Institutes in 1978, then served as a technical teacher at the City University of New York (CUNY). His talents also extended to the precise and intricate work of a technical writer, and later to the joyful achievement of obtaining his Commercial Driver’s License, enabling him to drive a tractor trailer and then to embrace the role of bus driver—a role he cherished dearly, underscoring his lifelong zest for learning and new challenges.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gunter was a man of singular charm and character. Known for his peculiar sense of humor that enlivened many a gathering, and underpinned by a big heart, he was admired for his vast reservoir of knowledge. Those fortunate enough to know him recall the ever-present camera he wielded with deft hands, eternally ready to capture moments of joy, solemnity, and everyday beauty—his enduring love of photography a testament to his keen eye for beauty . His passions did not end there; a devotee of music and cosmology, he explored these realms with curiosity, talking his daughters’ ears off about them. ☺️ In addition, he was proud to be called a computer geek, who took a keen interest in writing, boat navigation and seamanship’s. Also his penmanship was memorable- when one saw it, they knew it was his.
Among his proudest accomplishments stands the compassionate act of voluntarily removing two children from foster care to raise as his own, a testament to his boundless capacity for love. This noble act speaks volumes of his character, and the legacy he leaves behind.
Gunter was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Herbert and Ursula Kloppsteck, and his son Alvin. He leaves behind a loving family who carry forth his memory: his devoted daughters Tika Smith and her husband Tony, Vicky Montoya and her husband David, along with eight cherished grandchildren. To them he was their quirky GG and Gpa.
We bid farewell to Gunter, we remember a life marked by generosity, wit, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. His legacy is one woven into the hearts of his family, and will not be forgotten.
