Harry Walther, age 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Charlestown-Wilton Overlook in Catonsville, MD. He was born January 19, 1930, in Baltimore, MD, to the late Ernest R. and Helene H. (Kossebue) Walther.
After graduating from Poly High School, Harry entered the US Navy serving from 1951 to 1955 on the USS Wasp, achieving the rank IC2 (Interior Communications). Interesting, Harry became a member of The Royal Order of the Blue Noses entering the Artic Circle during the fall of 1952.
While serving in the Navy, Harry married the late Arlene Mae Schaefer on August 22, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Monastery in Baltimore, MD. Harry and Arlene were happily married 67 years.
Following his service in the Navy, Harry began working at the C&P Telephone Co. as a Frame Attendant and over a 35-year career promoted to Test Engineer then to Engineer Management. While working, Harry also earned his BS Degree from Loyola College in Baltimore MD.
Harry was a devoted husband to Arlene and wonderful father to two sons, Greg and Doug. He was loved and admired by his family, friends, neighbors and collogues, drawn in by his friendly happy outgoing personality.
Harry enjoyed being outdoors, which included sitting in the sunshine and playing golf, as well as many family trips to Ocean City, MD and cruise vacations with Arlene in retirement. Most of all, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren Ashley and Marty and seeing the arrival of his great-granddaughter Carter. For 42 years, Harry also cherished carrying on his father’s family tradition of baking Christmas Stollen that he in turn passed down to the next generations.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Charlestown-Wilton Overlook and Gilchrist Hospice for the considerate care and compassion shown to Harry.
Harry is survived by his sons Gregory and Douglas Walther; grandchildren Ashley (Curtis) Bryant and Martin Walther; great-granddaughter Carter Bryant; niece, Kristin (Scott) Timberman and nephew Chad (Kim) DeVries; and many Walther nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Arlene (Schaefer) Walther; brother Robert Walther; brother Charles Walther; brother George Hildebrant; sister Charlotte Seamon; sister Margaret Sudek.
In memoriam, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First Tee of Howard County located in Columbia MD.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, MD.
