Helen’s life on Earth ended on November 9, 2024, in the company and voices of loved ones, at the age of 81. Helen was born in Atlanta, Georga and lived with her family in the U.S. and Europe during her formative years as her father was an Air Traffic Controller for the Civil Aeronautics Administration (Federal Aviation Administration presently). She was a devoted and nurturing sister, which ultimately led to her career as an educator, and role as a mother.
Helen earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Virginia, and resided in the Charlottesville, Virginia area as a teacher. She inspired and touched hundreds of lives during that time.
After teaching in Virginia for over 30 years, she retired to Edenton, North Carolina to finally fulfill her dream of living near water. While enjoying the views of the Chowan River, she never fully let go of her passion. As a result, not long into her retirement, she returned to teaching at D.F. Walker Elementary in the Chowan County School system where she continued to teach and learn from the many individuals in her life. Her renewed service lasted 8 years.
Helen displayed a relentless energy and motivation in life to have a positive influence on humanity. She expressed this influence by recognizing and communicating the individual uniqueness of those she encountered. Her faith was comprised of love, intellectualism, and determination. She evangelized this faith with generosity, empathy, compassion, and a witty sense of humor. Helen maintained the belief that everyone possessed the ability to discover their own talents and gifts, despite physical, emotional, or personal obstacles. This belief materialized artistically and creatively in her environment.
Preceding her in death are her parents William Thomas III and Phyllis Deason and siblings William Thomas Deason IV, Joanna Bernard, Timothy Deason, and Sallie Feldman. She is survived by her siblings Judy Valente and Patrick Deason, her son John Wiggins and daughter-in-law, Kristy, and 3 grandchildren, Jack, Molly, and Joshua. She also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
Family will receive guests on Saturday December 14, 2024 from 9am to 11am and a celebration honoring her life will immediately follow. The location for the service will be Greenbrier Elementary School Auditorium, 2228 Greenbrier Drive Charlottesville, VA 22901.
