JAMES “MIKE” MUNN JR, age 77, passed away on August 20, 2025. He was born to Mary Heyward and James Munn Sr. on January 21, 1948 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Raised by strong parents, he carried his father’s unwavering work ethic and his mother’s resilience and toughness. He attended Public School 14 and Lincoln High School where he excelled academically and shined as a track athlete. He graduated at the top of his class and went on to attend North Carolina A&T State University where he majored in Engineering and Architecture. While there, he became a founding line member of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc., dedicated to social justice and community service. Upon graduation, he returned to Jersey City, working with an architectural firm that won the contract to design the PATH Train Center. Soon after, he spread his wings and entered the United States Air Force, beginning a remarkable career that took him around the world. He met the love of his life, Takako, while stationed in Japan in 1976. He also encountered Nichiren Buddhism, beginning his journey of human revolution. Mike was a practicing Buddhist and leader in his local SGI-USA Waldorf District for over 27 years. Mike served his country with distinction for more than 26 years in the United States Air Force, retiring with honors as a Lieutenant Colonel. Beyond his professional achievements, Mike’s greatest joy came from his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Mary Heyward Munn, and his siblings Vincent Munn, Dale Munn, Alice Johnson, and Zelma Munn. Those who knew Mike will remember a man who walked his own path, guided by what he believed in his heart to be right. Sharp-tongued and unafraid to speak the truth, he had a way of telling people what they needed to hear—even when it wasn’t easy. His honesty, courage, and uncompromising spirit left a lasting impression on everyone around him. Mike is survived by his children, Joy Munn, Zensaku Munn, Prince Michael Nabarte and his daughter-in-law, Lillian Lopez, grandchildren, Mercedes Munn, Sofia and Venicio Lopez-Munn, brothers, Dennis and Darryl Munn, sisters, Mary Ellen, Agnes, Gwendolyn, Vivienne, and Bernadette Munn. As well as a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins all of whom carry forward his legacy of strength, resilience, and living fully with no promise of tomorrow.
