John James “Butch” Betsko Jr., 69, of Indian Head, Maryland, was called home to our Lord on February 1, 2026.

Born on May 6, 1956, in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, Butch spent his early years in Maryland before moving to Catlett, Virginia, where he built a home from the ground up and raised his beloved daughter. Later in life, he returned to Indian Head, Maryland.

A proud veteran, Butch honorably served in the United States Army — something few may have known, but a part of his story that meant a great deal to him. His strength, determination, and strong-willed nature were evident from an early age and remained with him throughout his life.

Butch spent much of his life owning and operating his own construction company. He was extraordinarily talented — able to see a vision and bring it to life with his hands. One of his most cherished creations was “The Hut,” a simple shed transformed into a gathering place where friends became family, nights were filled with music and laughter, and names and messages were etched into the now-infamous picnic table. It was more than a place; it was a reflection of him and his magnetic, fun-loving soul.

Creative in every sense, Butch was just as skilled in the kitchen as he was with tools. He could cook just about anything and was especially known for his pork barbecue and cabbage rolls. He loved being outside — hunting and fishing in his earlier years, gardening and landscaping as he grew older — happiest when working with his hands and creating something meaningful.

Butch was always the life of the party and loved being surrounded by family and friends. He was often the last one standing — dancing, singing, and making sure everyone around him was having a good time. A self-taught bass player, he had a deep passion for music. He didn’t just listen to songs; he wanted to understand the artist, the backstory, and the meaning. Music was connection for him, and there are countless songs that will forever bring his memory to mind.

More than anything in this world, Butch was a proud daddy to his one and only daughter, Angie Lynne. She was his heart and greatest joy. He spoke of her constantly — her drive, her accomplishments, and the woman she had become. Their bond was unwavering, built on unconditional love, steadfast support, open communication, and annual trips to the Ocean City car show. His love for her was fierce, protective, and unmistakable — a love that shaped her life and will continue to guide her always.

He is survived by his daughter, Angie Lynne Judd; his former wife and lifelong friend, Jill Lynne Betsko; his brother and very best friend, George Edward Betsko, with whom he shared countless memories and years together; and many dear friends who became like family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Melva Betsko Lee, and his mother, Melva Betsko.

Butch lived a full and unapologetic life. He left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Though he may have left this physical world, he leaves behind a legacy of laughter, music, generosity, craftsmanship, spirited debate, good food, and a lifetime of unforgettable memories. Words cannot fully capture how deeply he will be missed.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
