Marybeth Metz passed away on May 11, 2026, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Maryland. She was 81. The cause of death was a heart attack.
Marybeth was born on October 30, 1944, in Galesburg, Illinois. She was raised by her mother, Ruth Carolyn Metz, in Galesburg, where she attended public schools, including Galesburg High School. In 1962, as Marybeth was entering her senior year, her mother moved to the Washington, DC area. Marybeth moved to Springfield, Illinois, to finish high school. She lived with her uncle, Hewitt Metz, her aunt, Mary Metz, and her cousins, David and Sarah Metz. She attended Springfield High School for her senior year, graduating in 1963. Following graduation, Marybeth joined her mother in Washington, DC. She studied political science at Geoge Washington University and worked a variety of jobs. Following her mother’s death in 1983, Marybeth moved from the DC area to Baltimore, MD, which became her adopted and beloved city.
Marybeth held a number of executive assistant/office manager positions over the years, but the high point of her career was with Legg Mason, where she was the Office Manager of the Internal Audit Department. She was beloved by her colleagues, who described her as the heart of the department. She remained lifelong friends with several of her Legg Mason colleagues, whom she regarded as family.
Marybeth was a voracious reader who devoured mysteries, novels, biographies, and books on politics and show business. She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Baltimore and a volunteer at the soup kitchen sponsored by the church. She was skilled in a number of needle crafts, including knitting and crotchet, and was an accomplished weaver. She loved cats and kept them as companions all of her life.
The final years of Marybeth’s life were not easy. She suffered a stroke in 2021 that left her with left side paralysis and forced her to move into a nursing home in Towson, MD. Despite this setback, she never stopped reading, never lost interest in the world around her or the people she loved. She retained her sense of humor and greeted visitors with a smile and an enthusiastic welcome.
She is survived by her first cousins, David Metz (Susan) and Sarah Metz Wood (Robert), and their children and grandchildren, as well as dear friends, Steve Homza, Bonnie Null and Mukund Manohar.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Marybeth’s honor to Christ Lutheran Church, 701 S. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21230.
