On December 22nd, Pat Engel left us at the age of 88, due to flu and respiratory failure.
She will sadly be missed.
Her life was full and happy. She was the beloved wife to Alfred Engel for 58 years until his passing in 2015. Pat was a stay-at-home loving mother and is survived by Patricia Kernan and husband Hobie, their daughters Katelyn Grant (husband Nic), Sarah Kernan (husband Michael Kibler); Cynthia Pender and husband Tom, their sons Timothy, Andrew (wife Lydia), Scott (wife Zoey); Gregory Engel and his sons Casey (wife Kristin), Colin (wife Jill). She was predeceased by her son Steven Engel. She loved, and is survived by, her great-grandchildren Piper, Bodhi, Sunny, Norah, Quinn, Chloe, Dorothy, Lola, and Peyton, plus one on the way.
Time spent with her growing family was precious. She was their Mommom, and known as Mommom to many others. She is also survived by her loving sister, JoAnn Berberian; and predeceased by brothers James Gamber and Paul Gamber.
The family of six took camping trips. She loved to travel. Once her kids were grown, she and Al traveled across the country in a van. And then, did it again 20 years later with a small camper. They visited all 50 states!
Family and friends were very important to her. She and Al hosted potluck 'picnics' at their home every Labor Day and Memorial Day for 38 years (until covid). With music, swimming, games, etc, it kept the large extended family together. Everyone looked forward to her picnics. She also kept the pool in good order so there were always folks coming by to say hi and take a dip.
Pat was a devoted member of the St Mark's parish, and volunteered her time to help others. She attended St. Joseph’s Monastery in grade school and graduated from Seton High School. As a Catholic of deep faith, she walked the walk. Always kind, caring, generous, and non-judgemental, she was an exceptionally beautiful human being. Anyone who knew her, or upon meeting Pat, felt her warmth and loving way.
She set examples of kindness throughout her life.
Once, while driving, a teenager was walking down the road in the pouring rain. She stopped to ask if he needed a ride. He took the ride and said that his bike had been stolen. She took him where he needed to go. The next day, she salvaged a bike from her garage and delivered it to his place of work.
Pat volunteered her time at Little Sisters of the Poor helping with ceramics creations. She also drove a school bus for a few years down harrowing roads such as Oella Ave. Oh the stories she'd share. As she slowed down in life, she stayed active with her pinochle card group at the Senior Center, and was an avid reader.
She will be missed by many and will never be forgotten. She was incredibly at peace with God and ready to move on. She knew she had done her best while she was here.
Mass will be held at St. Mark’s Chapel at 30 Melvin Ave., Catonsville MD 21228 on Saturday February 28, 2026 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her honor may be made to St. Mark’s Church. Internment private.
In Pat’s/Mom’s/Mommom’s honor, the family suggests we all strive to incorporate daily acts of kindness in our lives.
