Raphael Shin

Raphael Shin, a revered herbal medicine doctor, passed away on July 30, 2025, at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Born on October 19, 1948, in Jinju, South Korea, Raphael dedicated over twenty years of his life to the field of alternative medicine, where he profoundly impacted the lives of many through his practice.

His educational journey was marked by remarkable achievements, earning a PhD in Oriental Medicine as well as a Master of Science in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, both of which showcased his deep commitment to health and healing. He was honored on the Dean’s Honor List and held licensure as an acupuncturist in both California and New York. His professional expertise was complemented by his genuine desire to help those in need, providing counseling and support to countless individuals seeking a healthier lifestyle.

Beyond his career, Raphael was a devoted family man who cherished time spent with his loved ones. His warmth and kindness were mirrored in his boisterous personality, marked by a quick wit and a great sense of humor. A great cook, he often prepared meals infused with his passion for health, sharing not only food but also conversations rich with insights about wellness. His love for nature took him on many hikes, finding joy in the serenity and beauty of the outdoors.

Although Raphael faced personal challenges and moments of frustration regarding his family's circumstances, his love for them remained unwavering. He made sacrifices to ensure their success and happiness, embodying the virtues of a committed and loving father.

He is survived by his sons, Chris Shin and Lawrence Shin, who will forever remember him as a guiding light in their lives. Raphael was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Shin, whose memory he honored through his values and actions. His legacy of love, dedication, and commitment to health will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
