Robert Edward Williams passed away on July 31, 2025, at the age of 82. Born November 9, 1942 in Elgin, Illinois, Robert dedicated his life to both his profession and his family, deeply impacting the lives of those around him.
After earning his BA from Beloit College and his JD from the University of Illinois, Robert dedicated the majority of his career to the firm of McGuiness and Williams in Washington, D.C., where he practiced employment law with unwavering dedication and integrity. He argued before the Supreme Court and US Courts of Appeals, authored numerous influential books, and never missed a day of work in his life —a testament to his tireless commitment to his craft.
About law school, he wisely said: “It wasn’t hard; it was just a lot of work.” This mantra inspired those around him to embrace their paths with determination and courage.
Beyond his legal accomplishments, Robert embodied both intellect and whimsy. He loved word puzzles, puns, drawings cartoons and caricatures, telling stories, and filling the lives of everyone around him with laughter.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Williams, his partner in adventure and love for over 65 years. Together, they journeyed around the world, creating a treasure trove of memories. He was a proud father to Jeff Williams (Jenn) and Carol Williams Jones (Ben), guiding their lives with love, wisdom, and humor. Many of their happiest times as a family were spent in the mountains of Virginia and at the lake in Upper Michigan.
The arrival of his grandchildren—Chance, Bug, Zoe, and Tyler Williams, and Hanna and Ozzy Jones—filled Robert's life with joy. He treasured every moment spent with them: celebrating milestones, attending games and events, reading in silly voices, and creating memories filled with laughter and love.
Robert Williams will always be remembered not just for his remarkable contributions to the field of law, but as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be profoundly missed, yet his legacy will forever resonate in our hearts.
To honor Robert’s memory, the family suggests a charitable donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation at parkinson.org.
