Sevasti Dimitrios Kornias

Sevasti (Sylvia) Dimitrios Kornias, 62, passed away peacefully at home on August 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Chios, Greece, Sylvia was raised in the Greek Orthodox tradition and lived in Baltimore for much of her life. As a young adult, she worked at her family’s Greek carryout in Baltimore. During the 1990s, she worked at H&S Bakery and later at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she worked on the burn unit helping to feed and care for patients.

Those who knew Sylvia will remember her as a kind, caring, and empathetic person who cared deeply for those around her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and all those who knew her.

Sylvia is survived by her son, Georgios Gates; her daughter, Markella Stefanaras; her grandchildren, Demetri, Dominick, Liliana, Gabriel, and Alaia; and her siblings, Paraskevi and Chris. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Demetri Frangiadakis, who passed away in January 2025; her father, Demetrios, who passed away in 1987; and her mother, Maria, who passed away in 2023.

Throughout her life, Sylvia dreamed of one day returning home to Greece. Although she was never able to make that journey, her family hopes that her spirit has finally found its way home.

Sylvia was comfortable and free from pain during her final days and passed peacefully at home with her daughter by her side.

There are no services planned at this time. Sylvia’s family asks only that those who knew her remember her fondly and keep her memory with them
