Stuart Symington, Jr., known to his friends as "Tim", was born June 12, 1925 in Rochester, New York, the son of Evelyn Wadsworth Symington and Stuart Symington. After serving in the Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946, he earned his bachelor's degree from Yale College and graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1953. He practiced law for over 50 years in New York and St.Louis, taking time off to work on both his father's campaign for President of the United States in 1960 and his four successful Senate campaigns; and also on several successful Congressional campaigns for his brother, James Wadsworth Symington. Among Tim's many board memberships and civic accomplishments, he was a founder and Past Chairman of the University of Missouri - St.Louis Chancellor's Council, Director of the St. Louis Mercantile Library Association, Trustee of the William A. Bernoudy Foundation, and Honorary French Counsel in St. Louis for many years, for which the French Government awarded him the Ordre National du Mérite, as Chevalier. Tim led a life full of intellectual curiosity. He loved the power of words and was a lifelong learner. He spoke Russian, French and German and published several books including Malindy's Freedom, Tagging Along, Throwing The Bolt and Russian Kids. He was an accomplished watercolorist, played the piano and harmonica and sang countless songs from "his day" whenever prompted. He was a masterful storyteller, possessing an extraordinary wealth of anecdotes and experiences from his century of life. But he also was a good listener, providing wise and empathetic advice and supportive, trustworthy counsel to all who asked. Tim went out of his way to touch many lives and engage in other people's problems, especially those less fortunate, with a remarkable memory for detail about the experience of those he helped. He loved his family more than anything and set an admirable example for American citizenry and civic participation. He was also a sportsman, rowing crew in school and college, and playing tennis and golf into his mid 80's. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Janey Belle (Studt) and sons William Stuart, Sidney Studt and John Sante Symington, his brother James Wadsworth Symington, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. His eldest child, Anne Wadsworth Symington, predeceased him. A memorial service and a service at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later time.
