Vernon “Rick” Franklin Henderson Jr., age 80, of Westminster, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025.
Born on June 27, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, Rick lived a life marked by service, dedication, and connection. He was a proud veteran, having served honorably in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Rick built a distinguished career at the National Security Agency, where he retired as the Registrar of the National Cryptologic Museum at Fort Meade, Maryland.
Rick was deeply committed to the values of community and mentorship. A lifelong Boy Scout, he served as Scoutmaster for Troop 483 in Silver Run, Maryland, and volunteered as a Campmaster at BSA Camp Tuckahoe in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. After retiring, Rick continued his service by volunteering with the National Park Service at President Eisenhower’s Farm in Gettysburg.
Rick was known for his outgoing personality and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. Whether sharing stories about his time in the Scouts or his love of history, Rick’s enthusiasm was infectious. He cherished time spent outdoors and never underestimated the joy of a good nap.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Jo Ann Henderson; his children, Robert Henderson and Jean Wood; his daughter-in-law Katherine and grandson Nicholas; his son-in-law Jason and grandchildren Aurora and Cyrus.
He will be remembered for his generous spirit, his love of storytelling, and the warmth he brought to every room and trail he walked.
A private celebration of Rick’s life will be held with family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
