William Calvin Spedden, 82, of Dallas, Texas, formerly of Cambridge, Maryland, died peacefully on May 5, 2026. He was born on January 10, 1944, in Cambridge, Maryland, the son of Normalee Creighton Spedden and William Sidney Spedden.
Calvin was a gifted student and graduated as valedictorian of Cambridge High School in 1962. While still in high school, he authored a book titled How to Teach Yourself Calculus. He also studied piano at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore and, as a high school student, conducted the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Salisbury, Maryland.
He attended Harvard University on scholarship, where he was placed in advanced graduate-level courses and roomed with Phil Bredesen, who later served as Governor of Tennessee. He continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan.
Calvin moved to Baltimore, where he became a member of the Society of Actuaries and worked for S.M. Hyman Co. He later relocated to Dallas, Texas, where he founded Spedden and Associates.
Throughout his life, Calvin maintained a deep passion for classical music and greatly enjoyed playing his grand piano. He was an avid photographer who developed his own prints, traveled extensively around the world, and was a dedicated patron of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He was also a lifelong animal lover.
Calvin remained a bachelor. He is survived by his sister, Linda Yukna; nephews Schuyler Yukna and Matthew Yukna and Matthew’s wife, Jennifer Yukna; grandnephews Evan Yukna and Vincent Yukna; and grandniece Sophia Yukna, all of Baltimore. He is also survived by several cousins in the Cambridge area.
A graveside funeral service will be held in Cambridge, Maryland, with the date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 3620 Red Rose Farm Rd., Baltimore, MD 21220.
